A Little Basketball History cont

Originally a contest would consist of two 15-minute halves with a five-minute rest between. This was changed to two 20-minute halves with a 10-minute rest between.

1893

Pivot play (shifting one foot while anchoring the other) is ruled not to constitute a "traveling" violation.

1894

The free throw was added to the rules as the consequence for committing a foul. Initially set at 20 feet.

1895

The number of five players was definitely agreed upon and foul shots were to be taken from 15 feet. Backboards introduced to eliminate crowd interference (from the balcony) with shots at the goal.

1896

Field goal value is changed form three to two points and free throws form three points to one point.

1897

Yale University team introduces "dribbling" as offensive strategy since there is no rule to ban such a maneuver.

1898

Overhead dribble and double dribble are banned.
